DISFEAR

CATCHING UP WITH...
By: Josh Schafer
Ready to roll right into the studio, DISFEAR is gearing up to record their next record for the eager hardcore masses. With the recent addition of ex-ENTOMBED axe man Uffe Cederlund, the band is prepared to bring you an album that is as vibrant and intense as their ferocious live show. I recently caught up with vocalist Tomas Lindberg and got a chance to discuss the writing process, the trials and tribulations of finding a suitable recording studio, and tips on how to live your life more efficiently.
RESOUND: You guys are just about finished writing for the new album. How did the writing process go this time around?
TOMAS LINDBERG: “As usual the process of writing new material took some time, mostly due to more extensive touring. However, we feel that the construction of a solid song should take some time, as well as attention to detail. We are 100% happy with the new material; it sure was worth the effort.”
RESOUND: What is the new stuff sounding like? Still defending the D-beat?
LINDBERG: “I guess you could say that it’s more of everything you learned to expect since the last album. It’s more hardcore, more R.O.C.K., more punk. We paid a lot of attention to how these different influences in our sound corresponded to each other this time around, which we feel resulted in a more coherent album. In other words, it’s hard as fuck and it rocks! I guess the extensive touring made us realize in a new way what stuff we should concentrate on and what works in the live environment.”
RESOUND: How are the songs lyrically? What are you guys writing about with the new album?
LINDBERG: “More misanthropy for sure, though I tried to write some more inspiring words this time around. I always say that I’m a misanthropic humanist. I love people; it’s the human race I have problems with.”
RESOUND: Have any titles for the songs yet?
LINDBERG: “Some of these might change, but here goes nothing: ‘Phantom’, ‘The Cage’, ‘Testament’, ‘Deadweight’, ‘Failure’, ‘In Exodus’, ‘Live the Storm’, ‘The Furnace’, ‘Fiery Father’, and ‘I, Heathen’.”
RESOUND: You’ve had a lineup change, with Uffe Cederlund, formerly of ENTOMBED, joining on guitar. How has that been working out?
LINDBERG: “Well, the thing with Uffe joining was that the process was so smooth that we hardly realized that it was happening. All of a sudden he was just a member. He is a great guitar player, songwriter and one of my oldest personal friends. It is truly a blast having him in the band. His style (both playing and writing) has definitely had an effect on how the new album sounds. His knowledge about, and feeling for hardcore has kept the concept of what DISFEAR is alive and well in the process and you know how his guitar sound hits you like a wall, you just gotta love that!”
RESOUND: I understand you guys will be going to a new studio to record this new album. Have you found the one you are looking for and how has that search been?
LINDBERG: “At first we were so confused. We just didn’t know what to search for. A lot of different ideas were thrown about, but in retrospect, they all felt like compromises. We lost a good friend when Mieszko died, but we also lost a big part of our sound. It was when Kurt (Ballou, CONVERGE) from Godcity first approached us with the idea of recording in Boston that we felt that everything fell into place. We have a lot of respect for his knowledge and ideas. I’m pretty sure this will be the most brutal and hard-hitting DISFEAR recording to date! Take cover!”
RESOUND: After the record comes out, do you have any plans on touring? Will you be making any stops over here in the States?
LINDBERG: “DISFEAR is a live band above everything else. It’s what we live for. We’ll try to make sure that every part gets their fair share of R.O.C.K. for sure.”
RESOUND: Speaking of shows, have you guys been able to play at all lately? If so, have you been playing any of the new stuff?
LINDBERG: “Lately, we have been focusing hard on the writing process, but during our last few tours we’ve been airing some of the new material. I really think this is one of the best ways to see what works and what doesn’t, by using the crowd as human guinea pigs. We´re planning a trek through Europe in May, and I guess we’ll use this opportunity to try out some more stuff as well.”
RESOUND: Has anything else been up with you guys we should know about? Anything else you would like to share with our readers; a good story, some personal advice, or a funny joke?
LINDBERG: “Well, Uffe is a proud father these days and we’ve all gotten a bit older, and wiser. Basically, we’re just eager to unleash the new album upon you all and go from there. As for personal advice - green apples are good for your voice, cigarettes are not. Don’t sleep while grinding; eat hot and spicy food, and listen to THIN LIZZY for a more efficient lifestyle.
